Twinkle, twinkle, winter star

From village scenes to cabincore quilts to winter botanicals, Opposite Wall's O’Tannenbaum art collection taps into the spirit of coziness.

Our artists took inspiration from mid-century storybook imagery, vintage holiday cards, paint-by-number landscapes and decorative ephemera to get to the heart of this wintry collection. We wanted to toast the holidays, yes, but also go way beyond.

The goal: to create a timeless collection that could bring warmth, wonder and that feeling of restful winter retreat to any space, all season long.

Natural elegance

We started at the root of all beauty: nature. With images of tall trees, fleeting wildlife and twinkling snow drifts, we looked out onto the cold from within the warmth of our hearth.

A huge theme in O’Tannenbaum is the stunning sight of evergreens, which we explored in both naturalistic and abstracted forms, and from both afar and up-close.

From wide-scale forest landscapes to isolated pine boughs, candle-lit trees and stylized branch details, we aimed to create images of firs so fresh you could practically smell them.

The warmth within

“We’ve tapped into the feeling of that first brisk winter morning, the ice rimmed window sills and that cozy quilt your Nana knit with this collection,” says Autumn Wood, Senior Creative Director at Opposite Wall.

“We wanted to bring you a set of prints that don’t just look pretty, they feel like the beginning of your favourite season.”

The cottagey wholesomeness of holing up around wood burning fire in the midst of a snow storm fuelled the imagery our artists created for O’Tannenbaum. They leaned into themes of patchwork quilts, snow-clad villages and cabins nestled in the woods to create an après-ski vibe that will make any room feel like a sanctuary.

Old-school techniques

With a muted palette dominated by rich earth tones like deep greens and warm russets, our artists used cut-paper collage and hand-drawn techniques to give their works that nostalgic folksy feel. They incorporate vintage textures like grainy finishes, imperfect edges and aged paper tones to make their prints feel as if they’d just been unearthed from a treasured memory box.

“This season, we’re expanding the folkloric heritage story,” says Wood.

We sought to create both complex vignettes that invite the eye to wander through details, but also big, bold statements that say “winter!” loud and proud. We hope you love the results as much as we do.
