Anna's Budding Creation

This summer we sent out a call to all Canadian kids aged 0-12 to enter our Budding Artist Competition with their best piece of art. And the winner was… Anna!

Aged 11, she painted a beautiful watercolour while on holiday in Ontario and titled it Rice Lake. It’s a beaut, and it’s available within our upcoming When I Grow Up collection.

30% of the proceeds of Rice Lake’s sale will go to the Creative Arts Foundation of Canada, a charity dedicated to providing opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to actively participate in the arts.

And excitingly, it wasn’t Anna’s first foray into the arts! She’s a passionate creator who hopes to become an artist when she grows up. Learn more below.

How old were you when you first started making art?

I’ve been drawing since I was in kindergarten, or even earlier. I always draw when I have spare time. I also like collecting all possible art supplies and storing them in my desk!

How did you first get into watercolour?

My mom is an artist so I always play with her supplies and I especially liked her watercolour palettes. I love mixing them up! I like how the colours mix and water flows when I use watercolours.

Did you take a special class, or learn in school?

I learned art from my mom. I copied what she was drawing at the beginning but then I started drawing my own themes.

What’s your favourite thing to paint?

I like to paint landscapes and nature because they have earthy colours like green, brown and blue, which are very easy and joyful to mix. I also love bringing my art supplies to my family outings so I can paint nature.

Do you have a favourite artist?

I like Van Gogh because he uses bold brushstrokes and bright colours. My favourite painting is Starry Night because of all of the whirls and zig-zags in the sky and the variety of blues and yellows.
